Figure Skating


The Winter Club of St. Catharines is proud to have all its Learn-to-Skate programs taught by professional coaches who are specially trained and certified through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

The Winter Club is a Skate Canada and Skate Ontario sanctioned club.

Figure Skating

  • Pre-Junior

    A program designed to transition the skater from beginner skating skills to fundamental figure skating skills. Skaters continue to be taught in a sequential and progressive manner through group and/or private lessons. 

    At the Pre-Junior Level, skaters will continue to develop their strength, technique, speed and confidence on the ice by continuing to work on learned/new skills taught in Agility, Balance and Control as outlined by Skate Canada. Free Skate (jumps, spins), Skating Skills (edge work and quality of skating) and the beginnings of Ice Dance are introduced and taught in structured and fun small-group lessons.

    Lessons are taught by NCCP Skate Canada Professional Coaches. All Skaters will track their progress through Skate Canada’s National Standards Testing System.

    Pre-Juniors must have passed Stage 4 CanSkate  to be recommended for this program.

     - Skaters must be recommended for this program 

    - Must wear figure skates with laces

    - Must wear a CSA helmet until all Stage 5 levels have been passed

  • Junior: Star 2-3

    A program designed to transition the skater from fundamental skating skills to more developed figure skating skills.  Skaters continue to be taught in a sequential and progressive manner through group and/or private lessons. 

    At the Junior Level, the skater will continue to develop their Free Skate by continuing to grow and master their single jumps and spins. Skaters will be introduced to jump/spin combinations. At this level a skater usually gets their first “solo” – a choreographed piece of skater/coach chosen music.

    The quality of their skating and edge work is worked on in Skills. Ice Dancing is introduced with the beginning set of dances. Skaters at this level have the option of participating in competitions.

    A skater must have a Private Base Coach at this level.

    Lessons are taught by NCCP Skate Canads Professional Coaches. All Skaters will track their progress through Skate Canada’s National Standards Testing System.

    - Figure skates must be warn – must have laces

    - Juniors must have passed Star 1 and be recommended for this program 

    - Junior skaters must have a private coach

    - Junior skaters have opportunities to compete at competitions

    - Recommended to skate 2-3 times/week

  • Intermediate & Senior: Star 4 - Gold

    A program designed to transition the skater from solid foundational skills to more advanced figure skating skills.  Skaters continue to be taught in a sequential and progressive manner through group and/or private lessons. 

    All Skaters will continue to develop their Free Skate (jumps, spins, solos), Artistic, Skating Skills, Field Moves and Ice Dance skills. Skaters have the option to compete in competitions

    Intermediate Skaters (Star 4-5) will continue to focus on their single and combination jumps/spins and begin learning their axel. These new jumps and spins can be added to their Free Skate Solos.

    At Star 5, a skater may choose to add an Artistic Solo Program to their repertoire.

    Skaters continue to work on their Skating Skills and Ice Dances.

    Senior Skaters (Star 6+) will begin leaning and mastering their axel in combination, double jumps, combination double jumps and more advanced/complex spins and spin combinations.  Ice Dance and Skating Skills continue to be taught. 

    Lessons are taught by NCCP Skate Canada Professional Coaches. All

    Skaters will track their progress through Skate Canada’s NationalStandards Testing System.

    - Skaters must have passed Star 3 levels

    - Skaters must have a private coach

    - Must be recommended by a coach to skate at this level

    - Skaters have the option to compete at a competitive level  

    - Recommended to skate 3-4 times/week

  • Developmental Focus

    An innovative program set up, where skaters are put into groups based on skill level that will rotate through a variety of a coach-led

    Focused Skill Stations on the ice. There is also a mandatory off-ice component where skaters will have training in areas of dance, ballet, yoga, endurance, flexibility, rotation positions and core-strength.

    This program will provide structure and strong training for those skaters wishing to improve their skating skills, meet personal goals or to help become more competitive.
